Living Comfortably With Type II Diabetes

Diet Dilemma

Living with Type 2 diabetes presents a special kind of challenge.  Typically, people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight to begin with, and must modify their diet for weight-loss, in addition to managing their diabetes.  But does a diagnosis of diabetes mean you have to say good-bye to all your favorite foods? Which foods should you eat that will help you lose weight and maintain healthy levels of blood sugars? Can you manage your diabetes by diet alone?

Sweet Harmony

Fortunately, the foods that you eat to lose weight are typically the foods that you can eat to manage your Type 2 diabetes.  And when used in moderation, you can still enjoy some of your favorite foods and desserts.  Taking control of your diet is a bit part of the battle to live with diabetes.  Start with these five foods to kick your new eating plan into gear.

 A Grain of Truth

Everyone has heard it – whole grains are better for you.  If you’re living with type 2 diabetes, this is especially true for you! Adding whole grain foods – oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain pasta – can be an easy switch in your diet.  Enjoy a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, topped with dried fruits, for a healthy way to start the day, or for an evening snack!  Substitute whole grain pasta for your next Italian dinner, and the difference will be minimal – except to your health.

All the Colors of the Rainbow

Remember Roy G. Biv? This acronym that stands for the colors of the rainbow can lead you to a healthier eating plan.  Fill your plate with fruits and vegetables from each of the colors! Red peppers, oranges, squash, broccoli, blueberries, eggplant and plums are just a few of the healthy options you can choose from.

 Jack’s friends

Jack in the Beanstalk may have been on to something – there is a treasure found in beans! These healthy little nuggets pack a wallop of benefits towards managing Type 2 diabetes.  Available in a variety of offerings: black beans, garbanzo, white, lima, just to name a few.

 Skinny Cows

Type 2 diabetes does not mean an end to the array of choices in the dairy department of your grocery store.  Simply replace your favorite product with its non-fat alternative, and enjoy! Nonfat varieties are offered in milk, yogurt and cheese.  Long live the skinny cows!

 Go LEAN!

Make better choices in your protein portion.  Replace your meats with their healthier “leaner” cuts.  Trim away excess fats, and remove the skin from poultry to help maximize the benefits.  Smaller portions – protein should only be a fourth of your plate – will assist you in controlling your dietary needs.

Living with Type 2 diabetes is tough – but manageable with these simple changes in your diet.
